According to Toronto Sun:

Balakas, who owns three Bull and Finch pubs in Calgary, nearly broke down last Wednesday when he was reunited with the timepiece at 51 Division. He had since gone out and ordered an identical Cartier to take its place.

“The watch was given to me by a special someone and it means a lot to me,” he said. “I thought of the loss as the price of doing business in Toronto.”

He said three watches and some jewelry, worth about $120,000, were stolen from the Rosedale home of a friend while he was here on a business trip in January.

“I felt emotionally angry and frustrated after the watches were stolen,” Balakas said. “I thought what are the odds of them ever being found.”

He said he feels better about the city now and has earned tremendous respect for Toronto Police.

“The officers were very diligent and professional,” Balakas said. “I have nothing but respect and good words to say about Toronto police.”

Det.-Sgt. Howie Page said the Cartier was seen hanging from a suspect’s pants when he was stopped by Const. Rabie Kazzouh two weeks ago.

“The suspect took off and was chased over fences and backyards,” Page said. “The watch was tossed by the suspect as he fled.”

Kazzouh, and other officers, managed to trace the watch to the Rosedale theft, he said.

“His faith in our city has been restored a little,” Page said. “It took a lot of legwork but we were able to return the property to the visiting businessman.”

A 17-year-old young offender, of Toronto, has been charged with possession of property over $5,000 obtained by crime.

Cartier is suing QVC for infringing on a number of their designs including the popular Cartier Santos watches and the Cartier Pasha Grille trade dresses.  Cartier filed the complaint on February 13th.  The interesting part is that a number of the watches are form Joan Rivers best selling jewelry line.  It should be very interesting to hear her response!

This isn’t just a basic lawsuit asking QVC to cease selling those brands.  Cartier wants a permanent injunction, they want all the watches that infringe on their copyrights destroyed and they want all profits from any sales QVC had as well as any other damages… talk about intense!
